Story
Cosmic Witch Sisterhood is a retro looking visual novel that revolves around the life of Fortuna and her exile into space. Fortuna is a witch who ‘s talent is relaying the future through card reading. Upon divining the imminent demise of her coven, she is sentenced by the head witch Aedana to live in a cottage in the stars for a millennia to think on her actions.
However, that level of solitude would drive anyone to desperation and Fortuna is no different. After 200 years of her sentence, she decides to summon an ancient being in an act of defiance to break her from her bondage. As you follow Fortuna’s story your quest to free yourself is tied up in the cards as you create an all-new tarot deck and use its power to your own advantage.
This story is an interestingly philosophical one that questions our reality without compromising on a fun atmosphere. The balance between fun gameplay and serious storytelling blurs as you follow a truly compelling story about out- of- this world beings with very earthly wants and desires.
The setting of the game is artfully done in an 8-bit style with lo-fi beats playing in the background while you work your magic in the cosmos. A good portion of this game is tied up in Fortuna’s card reading abilities and her interactions with NPCs to further the plot. Many of the characters are very interesting and many of the choices that you make will not only affect your future but those of the ones you meet. This is more of a visual novel style game so there is no grinding for stats. Just you and your deck against the world. I
do feel that I should give a warning that this game is rated mature for a reason. Cosmic Wheal Sisterhood is a game that deals with an array of topics and some of them might be triggering for some. Be sure to do your research before purchasing the game.
Gameplay
This game is a visual novel, so a lot of the gameplay is sunk into your interactions with others. There are many NPCs to get to know and even some that you can romance. As you progress through the story you can give tarot readings through your new deck to influence how each NPCs life will turn out. You also gain magic of the four elements to use in creating new cards. Creating new cards takes up a lot of time too but acts as a calming therapeutic activity rather than just something to do to further the plot.
Each card you make is based on the different elements you pick (such as background, focal characters, and add ons) will affect the kind of card you create. You will then be able to draw these cards to be able to tell more in-depth fortunes for the people around you. These will influence the outcome of many of the characters’ futures as you are able to influence what happens to them.
While these actions could start to feel boring to some who are not as interested in visual novel style games, they do help to propel the story. If these activities do not sound fun to you then Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood may not be the game for you. However, if the discovery of new characters through witchy tarot cards that you craft yourself appeals to your more magical side, then I highly recommend checking out this game.
