Magical Game Recommendations
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Very few people were surprised when Baldur’s Gate 3 won the Game of the Year Award in 2023. With its expansive DND inspired world, wide array of character creation options, epic story, and intriguing gaming mechanics the possibilities for this game are endless.
In this behemoth of an RPG you wake up to discover that you have been abducted by a race know as the mind flayers who are intent on turning all of Faerun into mind flayers by infecting them with parasites. After the mind flayer ship you are on is soon attacked you find yourself on a random beach after surviving the crash.
After meeting several people who have also survived you compile your ragtag team of adventurers as you are pushed into the throes of the world. Will you be the one who stands in the way of all of Faerun turning into personality void calamri style aliens or will you be the cause of it?. If you love fantasy style RPGs with a little bit of fun and a whole lot of amazing thrown in, then I highly recommend playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
2. The Witcher 3
Given that the next installment in the series The Witcher 4 is slated to be released later this year (fingers crossed) you may be finding yourself curious about the franchise. If this is the case then I suggest playing the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
In this classic RPG adventure, you play as Geralt of Rivia who is a type of monster hunter known as a Witcher. Witchers are mutants who are paid to hunt down and fight monsters to protect others who cannot do so themselves. In this game Geralt must find and protect his former ward known as Ciri who has gone missing.
A mysterious group known as the Wild Hunt are after Ciri and it’s up to you to find and protect her before they get to her first. In this massive world you travel through an expansive map to follow Ciri’s trail. Fight your way through tavern brawls, use magic to ward of incoming foes, experience the beautiful landscape, or…maybe just play some gwent.
This game is a fun experience and a very enjoyable addition to the franchise. The Witcher 3 is also considered to be on one of the best RPGs of all time so if you’re looking to strengthen your RPG chops a bit more then I highly recommend playing this game.
3. Fields of Mistria
This widely popular cozy RPG game has swept its way into the spotlight. In this game you are an adventurer who has been hired by the baron and baroness to help rebuild the town of Mistria after a natural disaster leaves the town destitute.
Upon your arrival you are given a field and an old cottage to call your own (you can tell this is a fantasy due to the free real estate). As you continue to live and work in Mistria you start to learn more about the land.
As you dig deeper into the lives of those around you and the history of the village you discover that there are magical forces at work behind the scenes who are also intent on returning the village to its once prime state.
Farm, fish, and befriend your way through this wholesome game as you build a home for yourself amongst the rubble of this beautiful mountainside village. If a wholesome magical cozy RPG is what you’re in the mood for then you should definitely check out Fields of Mistria.
Ready to add Fields of Mistria to your gaming library? You can snag it here on Steam.
4. Potion Craft
Moving on to less RPG style games and more business management let’s talk about Potion Craft. A game with but one goal, to solve the townsfolks’ problems through the use of some herbs and a cauldron.
In this game you have taken up the mantle as the town’s newest alchemist. As the tenants come to you for help you are tasked with selling them a potion that will ease their toils, sooth their wounds, or to pour more fuel on the fire during petty arguments. Creating potions are not as easy as it looks as you follow a map to get to the desired “destination” in order to create your potion.
–
This requires using certain ingredients to get around obstacles and set the path straight on to your desired outcome. The great thing about this game is that there is often not an EXACT recipe to get to your specific potion so if you run out of one ingredient you can generally sub it out with another to fulfill the order.
Tend to your garden, make friends with merchants to fill your stock, and choose wisely who you help as it will affect the outcome of the game. If “measuring with your heart” is the philosophy you take when cooking then you should give this game a try.
5. Witchy Life Story
Witchy Life Story is a wholesome game built around the idea that maybe the most magic is in the small acts of kindness and self-regulation that we commit to on a daily basis. In this game you are a member of the esteemed von Teasel family. A high class and highly magical family of witches and wizards.
As it turns out you are in fact a disappointment to the entirety of your family after one too many magical screw ups. The one person who does not see you this way is your grandmother, the matriarch of the family, who has tasked you with one final test to decide whether you are worthy to continue studying magic.
You are sent on a two-week trip to the town of Flora to aid them as the town witch and help them to have a successful fall festival. Upon your arrival you start to realize that there is a lot more riding on this festival for the town’s people than you initially thought. Brew potions and craft charms as you learn more about those who you have come to help.
After being in Flora for some time you realize that maybe magic isn’t the answer to everything and perhaps all some people need is a kind word and the ability to find their own strength. If this sounds right up our alley then you need to try Withy Life Story.
6. Magical Delicacy
Looking for a side of delicious with your magical gaming sessions? Then look no further as Magical Delicacy has you covered. In this game you play as Flora a young witch trying to make it in a new city in the hopes of becoming a full fledged witch.
Upon your arrival you are given a run down shop to live in (again free real estate) and the ability to build up your magical business. As you play through the game you start to realize that this new city is not as full of witches as it once was and the only two left absolutely hate each other.
Create delicious recipes, fulfill orders, and get to know your patrons as you grow in your witchy endeavors. This game harkens back to retro style rogue likes but a whole lot more cozy. If creating delicacies in a witchy restaurant interests you then you need to check out Magical Delicacy.
7. Strange Horticulture
Love plants and puzzles? Then you should check out Strange Horticulture. You have decided to move into your eccentric dead uncle’s old shop known as Strange Horticulture to take up his title as the town’s horticulturalist. In the town of Undermere you are given the task of solving different problems through the power of plants.
Match plants in your greenhouse to those of the ailment people come to you with as you work to sooth societal sores through your plant-based power. You soon realize that rashes aren’t the only thing harming the town’s folk as news of a terrifying monster and a series of murders are soon heard rippling through Undermere.
Who is the culprit? What is this monster? And why can’t I seem to figure out the daily card puzzles without the help of the internet? Considering how there are no Witchers in this universe you can decide who to help and who to hinder as your choices will decide which of the 8 different endings you will receive on completion of the game.
If you like puzzle style games with a bit of the macabre and a whole lot of the occult, then you should check out Strange Horticulture.
8. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
Moving on to a more narrative style game The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a new take on the witchy aesthetic. In this game you play as the witch Fortuna who has been exiled for 1000 years into galactic solitary confinement after defying the head of her coven.
After getting through not even half your sentence you decide that enough is enough and summon a behemoth. These devils are powerful beings that are hard to control and did I mention it’s illegal to summon one? After committing this galactic crime you team up with this demon to gain your magic back and your freedom.
This game is a visual novel that incorporates a dynamic story with tarot deck building. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a visual novel with a lot of aspects of the game that will depend on your choices. Dialogue options are key and many of the decisions you pick will have a drastic impact on the overall outcome.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a new and fresh take on the witchy genre making this game one that definitely stands out in the cozy gaming space. If you’re interested in a more mature take on the magical gaming genre then you should check out The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.
9. Tavern Talk
If you’re into more DND inspired magical games then check out Tavern Talk. In this visual novel style video game you play as a faceless inn keep in the fantasy world of Asteria. The patrons of your tavern range from snooty seraphims (ouch) to charming swamp creatures.
Interact with your patrons and get to know their stories as you offer them solace or even advice alongside a dynamic drink. Fulfill orders by tossing together ingredients that will give a buff to each customer so that they can complete their quests.
This game has a well thought out story and in-depth character development. Though you are not technically an NPC in this game it’s interesting being on the other side of the bar. In this game you are often the one many of these characters go to for support, guidance, or just a good drink. If you’d like to be behind the counter for a change rather than the RPG adventurer then check out Tavern Talk.
