1. Map Out Your Budget
Any time I give any advice on anything computer related my first question s more than likely going to be, “What’s you budget?” Having a set idea of how much you’re willing to spend on an item is important especially when that item is as expensive as a headset.
Knowing what you’re able to spend will help inform your later decisions and will enable you to narrow down your options. You don’t want to have spent all that money on building your PC only to get to your gaming peripherals and realize that you have no money left in the budget. Remember to be smart about your money and know when it’s time to call it quits if the headset is out of your price range.
On the flip side of that, explore cheaper options. There are many quality headsets out there that are economically friendly. One example being Logitech as they do have quite a few cheaper options for headsets that are also very well made.
Always shop around and see what you have at your disposal. The market may surprise you.
2. Bluetooth or No Bluetooth?
Another factor to consider when choosing a gaming headset is whether you will want it with bluetooth connectivity or with a corded connection. This will depend on your preferences and what you’re goal is when using your headset. For example, a popular pro with the bluetooth route is having the convenience of no cords. Many people enjoy this as you don’t have those pesky cords getting tangled or always ending up under your chair’s wheels.
On the other hand, corded headsets have a more reliable connection and often provide a more accurate sound frequency. Corded headsets also tend to be cheaper than their bluetooth counterparts so keep that in mind when making your purchasing decision.
Neither one is worse or better and it will ultimately boil down to your preferences. In saying that, it’s important to do your research and know what you’re goals are for using the headset.
Lastly, it’s also worth noting that some headset models come in both bluetooth or corded. So if you find one that you like but wish it were bluetooth or corded check to see if the manufacturer makes that model in the connectivity type you prefer.
3. Take A Mic
Just like bluetooth some headsets come with a microphone while some do not. What you get is going to depend on your build and how big sound quality is to you.
Some pros of having a microphone is that you have a way of communicating with other gamers via your headset already built into your microphone.
This means you won’t have to purchase anything extra and will cut down on the headache of having to figure out more equipment for your computer.
In saying that some gamers prefer not to have a microphone built into their headset as they think the sound quality is not as good.
On the other hand, some gamers will get a headset without a mic and substitute with speakers to add a bit more customization to their gaming experience. This costs more and will add another layer to your set up but will also give you more control over your audio features. Some gamers will go so far as to not have a headset at all and just use a stand alone microphone and speakers.
Whatever you choose, play around with several modes of audio production and see what sticks. You might be able to get some cheap speakers that are used online or borrow some from a friend to see if this method is right for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment and if it doesn’t work then you know for next time.
4. Have a Place to Put it
Having an expensive headset is a nice luxury and most people are not too keen on keeping their headsets in harms way. Be prepared to have a place on your desk to keep your headset whether that be on your PC itself, the desk, or on an actual headset stand.
You can also shop around for headset holders that connect to the side of your desk if you don’t have one already. These are relatively inexpensive and might free up some space on your desk top for other gaming accessories (or in my case, more Kuromi figures).
There is nothing wrong with laying your headset on your PC or with just leaving it on your desk. However, I would advise against putting it over your screen as the oil and sweat from your head can smudge the screen (learned that one from experience).
5. What’s the Vibe?
Of course you should always keep your color scheme and aesthetic in mind when creating your PC. Creating a space you’ll actually WANT to sit down and game at is important especially given the money you might be dropping on it.
Don’t disregard your taste when it comes to buying a headset if the physical appeal is a factor for you. This may seem like a no brainer but is a detail that can often be overlooked if you’re not careful.
Aspects such as is your setup going to be red and back? Or do you want an all pink gaming build? Are factors to consider when making a cohesive PC set up.
While aesthetics are important you may end up having to make some compromises as some cool headsets may not have the best quality and vice versa. Keep an eye out and don’t be afraid to do some diy decorating if you feel confident with a can of pray paint or some washi tape.
6. Check reviews
Don’t under estimate the power of online video reviews. User feedback is very helpful in this case and could save you a lot of time and headache in the future.
I remember when I was buying my first headset. The model I was looking at was a popular one and looked like a good fit for me. However, when I went to look at the reviews a lot of people were struggling with the sound quality. Apparently, this model came with a free software that you downloaded to use to customize your audio.
Sure enough, when I purchased the headset the sound quality was not great even with the audio software. I was able to work it out but would’ve had less issues with another headset.
If you’re concerned about the audio on a specific headset look up reviews online that give you examples of what the headset sounds like in use. This helped me loads and is a great way to know what you’re getting into when you’re looking at a specific product.
Another option that might be available to you is going into stores and trying out what they have on display. This is a good option if you’re concerned about sound but also if your curious about comfort as well.
7. Pick Something You Know You’ll Love
Finally, always make sure that you’re buying something you know YOU will enjoy. It can be tempting to purchase a piece of gaming equipment just because everyone else on the internet says it’s good or because you feel pressured to get a specific headset.
Just because something’s popular doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good or even right for you. It’s worth taking the time to figure out what you like when it comes to your gaming setup. At the end of the day you are going to the be the one who is going to have to use the headset you buy so make sure it’s worth your time and money.
