It’s safe to say that cozy games have been a thing for a while now and there’s no slowing down on production any time soon. Some examples of this are games such as the original Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Harvest Moon, and of course the Sims.
The Sims franchise in particular has been a long-standing title in the genre due to how customizable as well as creative you can be within the game. EA created an offshoot of the Sims for the original Wii back in 2007 known as MySims.
This version of the sims was more kid friendly and had more of a focus on building as well as redecorating rather than just life building. The game is now remastered for the Nintendo Switch and has been brought back onto the scene now over a decade after its original release.
Though some of the game mechanics MySims possess are shared with other games such as Animal Crossing it does have some interesting nuances that were relatively new at the time of its release. Build up your town as different sims move in and bring with them new amenities. Create furniture and build new buildings to satisfy the sims who are moving to your town.
Imbue each item with different essence to appease the taste of each individual sim. If you fulfill each sim’s orders correctly this will increase your relationship with them and bring up the rating of your town. Progressing through each rating will unlock new features and further the story.

Story
The story goes that you have just move to a small town that is in desperate need of repair as it has fallen into disarray. When you arrive the mayor is elated as she is sure your talents of building and decorating will bring a lot of revitalization to the town. Name your town and customize your character as you venture into one of the biggest city recreational jobs of the late 2000s.
The story of this game is very simple and has many of the basic staples of the cozy gaming genre. There’s a town that needs fixing and you are the one right for the job. The main aspect of the game is very much akin Animal Crossing in that it develops as you have more townies move into the village.
Doing this will bring you new types of businesses such as restaurants, clubs, museums, and much more as you seek to bring back the bustle to this back water town. Though there isn’t much story heavy content to take away from this game the overall feel is very relaxing and well made.
With a relatively easy goal in mind this game keeps you wanting to continue playing while also not bogging you down with too much stuff to do. The NPCs are charming but there isn’t a lot of depth to them. If you’re looking for and in-depth story or deeply developed characters than this game is not for you. However, if you’re looking for an earlier rendition of a cozy game that has a fun premise and interesting character interactions then you might want to give this game a try.
Gameplay
The bread and butter of this game is the building aspect that grounds the entire experience. You are the home designer of the entire town, so it is in your fingerless hands to create a fun and exciting place to live.
In this game you physically build and decorate the furniture that you will use to redecorate every inch of the town. Make your own creations in your very own workshop as you follow the blueprints you to complete your orders.
Though the building aspect is fun there is a small snag in that you have to incorporate a specific type of essence into each piece of furniture so that it will fit to the villager’s taste. You collect different essences by doing pretty much everything in the game.
Fishing, mining, taking part in social activities (such as seances), and even being nice to different sims will yield different types of essence. Search for essence to complete your creations and if you hit a snag do your research to find where each essence resource is.
One part that can be difficult in completing tasks is that you have to paint each piece with a specific amount of essence and there may not be enough room in a blueprint design to fit all all of what you need to add. Go off the blue print if need be and create something totally new. If you meet the baseline requirements you can really do whatever you want. You can really make some cool, and weird, stuff to experimentation is key.
This can not only allow for you to finish your task but can also add for a good bit of creative license when completing a task. This makes things more interesting so don’t be afraid to add some of your own bit of “flair” to each piece.
You can always go back and take away furniture to a building as well as redecorate the outside altogether if you decide you don’t like something. You can change most things after you’ve done them, sans the placement of actual buildings, so you don’t need to worry much about whether something is perfect or not.
