Story
In this game you play as Flora, a which who has just left her hometown of Ulport to pursue her love of magic. Flora arrives fresh off the dock in the city of Groth and is immediately greeted by a frog named Hygge who, as it turns out, is kind of a big deal in the city. Upon your arrival Hygge shows you to an abandoned shop front where she states, in a very familiar fashion if you’ve ever played Animal Crossing, that she will give you the deed in exchange for a sum of money to be paid later.
This storefront becomes your home and business as you fire up the kitchen to make some magical cuisine. The story of this game brings the cozy as you, a young witch, embark on a journey to create magic and food in the city of Groth. As you move along in the story you realize that the witches in the city of Groth have a very strained relationship as you are caught in the middle.
Upon meeting the citizens of Groth you start to make friendships as you take orders from the citizens around town you become acquainted with their lives and their taste in food. Creating potions and food alike that deepen your understanding of the people and the world around you.
Magical Delicacy is an adventure that engages you and relaxes you in a well-crafted story that is sure to please. The story is a low stakes adventure that is well crafted, yet keeps you wanting more as you continue to venture through this lovingly crafted gaming experience. Magical Delicacy is by no means stressful but is every bit as wonderful as any good game should be.
If you’re looking for a game that has a more heart pounding story, then this game is probably not what you’re looking for. But if you want a calming yet entertaining adventure that deepens your love for cooking then check this game out.
Gameplay
Magical Delicacy marries together the joy of experiential cooking with a sense of magical whimsy. Much of the actual gameplay is that of cooking dishes and potions to satisfy needs. One aspect that I personally love about this game is the fact that you can sell things on your storefront that people can buy at random.
While the order fulfillment system is a great one it’s also very fun to create random dishes and sell them for more money. Many times, when you get an order in the game the customer will give you a rough idea of what they want but no solid recipe.
What’s great about the storefront is that when you have a dish that doesn’t end up panning out for an order you can just throw it in the storefront to make a quick buck. This aspect of the game is very forgiving and gives you a reason to want to experiment with ingredients
Another aspect of this game is that it plays like a platformer. How you get around is jumping, double jumping, and water jumping. You rely a lot on moving from platform to platform to get around the map, but the structure of the game does not make this feel stressful. While you have limitless tries in getting from one place to the other you will find that not much about this game is challenging in a way that will make you pull your hair out.
Magical Delicacy has no time limits, not health bars, and no way of tiring out your character. There’s not even fall damage so if you fall off a high place the game will put you right back where you were before you fell. While to some not having these aspects in this game may seem boring, the gameplay feels extremely engaging by adding a very important aspect that makes any game successful, which is fun.
Those looking for a more challenging platformer to play may want to look elsewhere for their new game play. However, if you are looking for a fun and forgiving platformer style cooking game, then give Magical Delicacy a look.
Pros
- Engaging stress-free gameplay.
- Fun cooking mechanic.
- Well-crafted story telling.
- There are cats and yes you can pet them (just walk up and press “y” you can thank me later).
Cons
- (Fine, I’ll give cons) Not very action packed.
- It is a platformer style game so some players not fond of this genre may not be into this game.
- While there are cats, and you can pet them, there are no dogs.
Conclusion
Magical Delicacy is a fun and wholesome adventure that will keep you engaged every time you play. Players looking for a more high-risk intricate platformer may want to look elsewhere. However, if a forgiving cooking style platformer cozy game sounds like your cup of tea, then maybe you should play Magical Delicacy.
